Answers to the important questions.
Everything you need to know about Luster, from installation to compatibility and more.

Technology and performance
How does Luster work without a physical switch? Luster uses touch-sensitive technology beneath the surface, allowing the entire faceplate to respond to touch. This turns the entire metal faceplate into a touch sensitive field including the edges and sides.
How reliable is Luster? With no mechanical components, Luster is designed to last significantly longer than traditional switches. We have had 0 failures during longevity testing.
Does it make any noise? No. Luster is completely silent with no moving parts.
Does it work through fabric or gloves? Yes. Luster can detect touch through light barriers like sleeves or gloves.
Do you have to touch the switch? No. Luster can detect presence just before contact, typically within 1–2 inches of the surface. Sensitivity may vary slightly depending on paint thickness and environmental conditions.

Product & Compatibility
Do I need a neutral wire? Yes. Luster requires a neutral wire to function properly. Most homes built after the mid-1980s already have this in place.
Can I install Luster myself? Yes. Installation is simple and works with standard U.S. electrical boxes. If you’re unsure, a licensed electrician is recommended.
What bubs are compatible? Luster is designed for modern dimmable LED bulbs and works with the vast majority of standard LED lighting. Due to variations in bulb design and driver quality, performance may vary slightly between brands.
Does Luster support 3-way switches? Multi-way support is currently in development. We currently have testing on electronic 3 way switches. IE 2 or more switches for one bulb or circuit. Current plans utilize Master/Slave or using WIFI/BLE for switching using 2 or more. Updates will be shared with early access members.
Design & Finishes
What makes Luster faceplates different? Unlike traditional plastic switches, Luster uses solid metal faceplates for a more refined, architectural feel. The result is a surface that looks and feels intentional in any space.
Can I paint the switch to match my wall? Yes. Luster is designed to be paintable for seamless integration into your space. Check CUSTOM page for more info.
What finishes are available? Luster is currently available in Black, White, Brushed Stainless, and Matte Stainless. Each finish is designed to complement modern interiors while maintaining a consistent, minimal look. We plan to release many more colors and styles, in addition to the paint readiness of our matte switch.
Will the faceplate wear over time? No. The solid metal construction resists wear, discoloration, and degradation, maintaining its appearance far longer than traditional plastic switches. However, any custom or painted faceplates are subject to exception depending on usage and sealing.
